La sarandunga es de Baní y de nadie más. Se toca alrededor de la devoción a San Juan Bautista, cuya fiesta cae a finales de junio, y la sostiene una hermandad local que se ocupa del santo, de la música y del orden de la fiesta. No es un género que viaje: es una práctica de un lugar.The sarandunga belongs to Baní and nowhere else. It is played around the devotion to St. John the Baptist, whose feast falls in late June, and it is sustained by a local brotherhood that looks after the saint, the music and the order of the celebration. It is not a genre that travels: it is the practice of one place.
Suena en tres tambores pequeños —los tamborcitos de sarandunga—, con güira y canto. Comparado con los palos, el conjunto es más agudo, más apretado y más rápido; el oído lo distingue de inmediato.It sounds on three small drums — the tamborcitos of sarandunga — with güira and voice. Compared with palos, the ensemble is higher, tighter and faster; the ear tells them apart immediately.
El repertorio se organiza en toques con nombre, y cada uno lleva su baile: la capitana, la jacana y la bomba. Se encadenan, y el cambio de uno a otro reordena la pareja en la pista. Aparte de los tres, existe el morano, que se canta sin tambor y pertenece a la parte devocional de la fiesta.The repertoire is organized into named sections, each carrying its dance: the capitana, the jacana and the bomba. They are chained together, and the change from one to the next reorders the couple on the floor. Apart from these three there is the morano, sung without drums, belonging to the devotional part of the feast.
Para un público neoyorquino la sarandunga suele ser el momento de sorpresa del concierto, incluso para dominicanos: mucha gente de la diáspora no la ha oído nunca, porque nunca estuvo en Baní en junio.For a New York audience the sarandunga is usually the surprise of the concert, even for Dominicans: many in the diaspora have never heard it, because they were never in Baní in June.
Se presenta con tres tamborero, güira, cantante y pareja de baile. Entra bien a mitad de programa, como contraste con los palos, y da pie a explicar cómo una misma isla sostiene tradiciones de tambor completamente distintas a cuarenta kilómetros de distancia.Presented with three drummers, güira, singer and a dancing couple.
