El merengue típico es del Cibao, el valle agrícola del norte, y su formación clásica son cuatro instrumentos: acordeón, tambora —tambor de dos parches que se toca con mano y palo—, güira metálica y marimba, una caja de cuerdas pulsadas que hace el bajo.
