La salve dominicana se canta en dos formas, y la diferencia entre ellas es una de las cosas más interesantes de la música del país. La salve de la Virgen —también llamada salve tradicional— se canta a capella, sin tambor, con una gravedad casi litúrgica: es la más cercana a la salve regina hispánica que le dio el nombre. La salve con panderos, o salve criolla, entra con percusión, se sincopa y se vuelve bailable.The Dominican salve is sung in two forms, and the difference between them is one of the most interesting things in the country's music. The salve de la Virgen — also called salve tradicional — is sung a cappella, without drums, with an almost liturgical gravity: it is the closest to the Hispanic salve regina that gave it its name. The salve con panderos, or salve criolla, enters with percussion, becomes syncopated and becomes danceable.

It is a portable instrumentation, of the parlor and the altar, needing neither amplification nor a stage, which is why the salve is the repertoire the ensemble brings to small spaces: chapels, galleries, halls.
Los versos de la salve son un archivo en sí mismos. Muchos son tradicionales y se transmiten de cantadora a cantadora; otros se improvisan en el momento sobre la misma melodía, nombrando a los presentes, al dueño de la casa, al santo de la promesa.
